Empowers 180 Unemployed women and youth, providing employment, reducing poverty

The increasing degradation of natural resources and unsustainable land practices continue to drive ecological conflicts in Somalia, particularly in the Bay and Bakool regions. These challenges lead to migration, poverty, and unemployment, especially among rural women and youth. In 2012, the situation in the Southwest State of Somalia was dire, with many local communities are struggling with food insecurity, limited livelihood opportunities, and a degradation of biodiversity

The EcoBees Somalia reports and collaboration with other stakeholders Statistics and local reports highlight that a significant portion of the rural population lives below the poverty line, particularly affecting vulnerable groups, including women and youth. Most government initiatives addressing these issues are often ad-hoc, failing to adequately address the unique challenges faced by these rural populations.

This project phase aims to train and equip over 180  basic beekeepers across selected districts in the Southwest State—specifically Baidoa, Burhakaba, Tigelow, and Diinsor. By focusing on sustainable beekeeping practices and agroforestry, the project will contribute to reducing conflicts, alleviating food insecurity, and offering new employment opportunities. Additionally, the project will aim to preserve and regenerate the biodiversity, particularly by supporting the threatened bee population.

Through targeted training and empowerment, this project will provide youth, particularly women, with the skills needed to not only improve their livelihoods but also contribute to the sustainability of local ecosystems and the economy, fostering a new generation of beekeepers dedicated to the restoration of natural resources and rural prosperity.
